I'm an Anne McCaffrey fan, too - Dragon Riders of Pern series. I also liked The Crystal Singer books by her.
Katherine Kurtz has a fantasy series about the Deryni which is quite good. The Deryni have magical abilities, and of course, they have been attacked and outlawed.
I liked Piers Anthony's Xanth series as well as the Incarnations of Immortality and the Adept series.
I think I'm going to have to read one of the Orson Scott Card books. I sell books on-line and have a few of his.
Barbara Hambly is supposed to be very good. I haven't read any of hers either (and don't have any on hand.)

Try Codex Alera, Dresden Files, A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, The Golden Compass (and the rest of that series), Tamara Pierce, The Inheritence Series, Artemis Fowl... those are the ones I can think of at the moment. If I come up with anything else really good I'll put them up.

I see that quite a few of the top authors have been mentioned. I'd add to the list Octavia Butler. She was an African-American author who wrote from the late 1970's through the 21st century. She died just last year.
Her books tend to be set in post-apocalyptic Earth. Some catastrophe has made all technology obsolete and people are surviving by their wits. Economics, race, class, education...the things we tend to rely on to categorize and "rate" one another are useless in her world. Also, the cast of characters are usually multi-ethnic, cultural, international, and from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
Butler uses very little "technology" and what she does use tends to be organic in nature. That is, humans evolve or develop some new senses, powers. Butler is much more interested in relationships than starships!

I hope you'll give her work a chance.

Neil Gaiman is an excellent fantasy writer. American Gods is one of my favorites of his (besides Good Omens which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchet). In American Gods, he ptus a whole new meaning in the term 'gods.' I can't really tell you more without giving the story away. Another one of my favorites by Gaiman is Neverwhere. This is a twist of Alice in Wonderland. I'm more of a horror fan than I am of fantasy; but I read American Gods and truly loved Neil Gaiman. I think you should check out his books. BTW - He just put a new one out!

The Otherland Series by Tad Williams is fantastic. It's a series based on virtual reality/internet and you won't want the series to end. There are 4 books in the series.
