Have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with 60,000 miles and a Series II 3.8L V6 and I smell that burnt antifreeze odor, but there's no visible leak, no puddles, etc. I only smell the odor outside the car, it doesn't come inside when I turn on the heat. Might just need an intake gasket, or might need a whole new intake. Common issue on these engines? How major to repair? What can I expect to pay (including labor) if it's the whole intake that needs to be replaced?

They are prone to leakage at the corner of the manifold. You can pressure test and find it, or if you look real close you should see some traces of the leak. It is a common problem, but not extreemly difficult to repair. The plastic manifold is also now an aftermarket ite produced by Dorman. The problem though is usually worn out gaskets.

If you decide to replace it yourself, avoid the use of sealants on those composite gaskets. They will mess things up.

If you have the smell of antifreeze You can have two problems ,one could be your thermostat that is opening intermittently when is at a close stage the fluid under pressure and steam will sip out of the over flow tube at the radiator , and the other you could have a very small crack on one of your hoses , it doesn't take much and you won't nessesarely see a puddle on the ground , better check it again , and also have the thermostat changed .

You can also have a cracked radiator. to get it replaced might cost around $200-$400 depending on where you live. If you think it is a common issue then you can call the service department of your local dealer and get an outstanding recall check for your car, just give them your last 8# of your VIN.
