It's about 3-5 years. I suspect blue, and red veil tails tend to live longer as they aren't inbred as much. (Assuming that they were healthy when you bought them.) That said other than double tails there isn't a big difference. Double tails tend to suffer bloat, and constipation.
Honestly the breed isn't as important as the following:
0)Clean water. Either a filter or weekly complete water changes. Every 4 days if a small container.
1)Don't over feed!!! He only needs about as much as his eye every 5-6 day during the week. He'll happily eat himself to death.
2)Temp. Keep you betta at 75-85F, and don't subject him to rapid temp change.
3)A tank/bowl of at least 2 gallons, and ideally 5 gallons. More water buffers ammonia/nitrates/nitrites and temp changes.
4)Read betta talk http://bettatalk.com/betta_care.htm

If taken care of properly they will live 5-7 years. But unfortunatly bettas are seen as "indestructable" fish that can survive anything, so many many people keep them in the wrong conditions and they die much sooner.

3-5 years if kept in an appropriately sized aquarium with a heater and filter.
Less than one year when kept in a cup or a bowl.

You mean a beta VCR? Their life span is zero as they no longer have movies for rent on beta.
