Aside from a possible physical attraction, why do friends or coworkers, of the opposite and same sex, observe shy people when they're not looking? Also, why are they always smiling if you happen to catch them looking at you?

They would like you to be more friendly with them, they worry that you don't want to be where you are.
They hope that they can ease you into a friendship with them. People are social beings and if they see someone who is not joining in they worry and they don't want them to feel left out.
They want to include them and they want to befriend the shy person to help them.
They are smiling because they want to be friendly and make the shy person feel at ease.

Uh are you sure they're always smiling ? Im a shy guy and when people look at me, i get all shyer and uncomfortable.

But for the first question, i guess some people just want to 'unlock' the secrets of the quiet shy guy.

Butterfly- What the heck is wrong with shy people ? I could turn that around and say that i hate noisy, over the top people, why must THAT be what is socially acceptable?

Well I've wondered that same thing too. I am an extremely shy person and it bugs me when people observe when I am doing my work, but when i take a break and look up, they watch me, smile, and go back to what they were doing. Then I've thought about it and I think that they probably feel that I am unapprochable because I am not shy. Therefore, I guess they "admire" me in secret because they do not know me. What i am trying to say is that they are probably as scared to talk to you as much as you are as to them. Maybe the smiling is a way of letting one know that you can approach them at anytime.

Well I can be really shy and really outgoing at work; school etc. It all depends on where I am and with who. Any who, when I catch people starring at me, I just glance back with a grin-so I don;t come off as a biitch. And, if I'm the one doing the starring it is because I doze of into space and don't realize it or I am just trying to figure them out-and when they catch me starring I smile-to let them know I don;t mean harm and I come in peace! That could be it-I think you're shy because you are too paranoid!

It appears like they think of you're eye-catching. The grinning means that they try to make a reference to you, and that they are happy to be around you. If there are 2 human beings observing you jointly and that they are guffawing, it is in all probability not stable. in case you think of the individuals watching you're distinctly stable-looking, too, attempt smiling decrease back at them flirtily. Who is conscious, you could finally end up with a sparkling pal.
