My bathtub is horrible to look at. Problem is I don't have the money to hire a contractor right now. Could a woman with middle of the road handy skills do this?

Yes, I've done five or six. You mean re-glaze. Get all your stuff from Home Depot, it's going to be about $65.00 for everything. If you have big large chips, then stop at "Advance" auto and get a small repair kit for fiberglass. Another $15.00
It's a lot of work but the results are startling if you do it right.

Some times if you use a cheap lanolium laminant, which isnt a good idea if you use a three piece inclosure, its pretty easy. Ususaly you put the back piece in first then there should be screws to attatch it to the wall and the side pieces should be srewed to the wall and then use corner trim to cover screws. Silicon all the joints, with tubntile silicon to match the tub.
