I'm in a business law class and need to write a research paper on a legal issue that affects business... I have no idea where to start. He hasn't formally assigned the paper yet but will tomorrow, and expects the outline due Friday morning. I have no idea where to start. Any ideas? (Thanks in advance!)

Just about every issue is a legal issue that affects business. Hiring practices (what employers can or cannot ask), discrimination and hiring of minorities just to fill a quota, pollution, overtime pay, benefits, sexual harrassment, just pick any area of business operation and there has to be tons of legal issues associated with it.

Well a big issue that's coming up is minimum wage laws, you could write about that. Several states just raised it and the new Congress wants to raise it as well. You could research how increases in min wages affect the number of people businesses hire or fire. Does it increase the quality of living or just increase the cost of goods and services. There is a lot to discuss here.

To get started, click on the link below. In AZ the minim wage law was just increased and as a result businesses are laying off thousands of disabled workers.

try http://www.findlaw.com It is free and there are tons of resources there. Also, http://www.nolopress.com Some suggested topics would be, tort liability and business structure; tax liability and business structure; paperwork and labor costs associated with regulation compliance. There are millions more, but these are just a few. BTW as far as the last topic goes, the government has tons of studies on the cost of paperwork associated with business regulation. If you need additional assistance you can e-mail me at kwd1964@yahoo.com and I will try to help.

I'd recommend looking into trademarks. Of course, I've been working in this field for over a decade so I'm a bit biased ;)

I posted some handy links that should get you going, if interested.

Hope that helps & best of luck to you on your paper!
