You wouldn't normally connect a NIC through a USB port - you'd use a CAT-5 twisted-pair cable with an RJ45 connector. You'd use a USB cable to connect through a USB port.

Usually, if your are on Windows. Your DSL provider, assuming they are selling you the modem, can tell you for sure, but typically the modem supports both NIC and USB and comes with cables for both. That's Windows. Linux, if you use that, may or may not support it, and I don't know about Mac but I suspect they can.
