When listing an item on ebay you have the insertion fee which depends on the amount you list the item for and the days you put the item up for between $.10 - $4.80 and once the item sells ebay will take between 5.25% - 10% of the amount you sold them item for. Also if your customers pay you by paypal. Paypal also charges you. For paypal they will take between 2 - 4% plus $.30 on each transaction. And don't forget shipping costs. Yes, you can make money. But you have to research the products to see what they are selling for and make sure you are charging enough for shipping and handling to cover the charges listed above.

I am a seller, used to be a power seller.
First, there are listing fees, that cost anywhere from $0.20-couple of dollars, depending on item starting price.
Second, you can have buy it now, a reserve, and other features that cost additionally, usually a buck or two.
Thirdly, you get a final value fee based on the selling price, if it's sold. No sale, no final value fee. Again, a dollar or so, depending on selling price.
Fourthly, Paypal fee. If you accept paypal for your payment, its like 2.9% +$0.30 fee. General again, another dollar or so.
I do a fair amount of selling, and if you sell an item for $25, chances are it could cost you about $3 to sell it or so. But that all depends on a variety of factors.
I used to have access to two items that sold like hotcakes on ebay! For a few months, I was making like $300 a week. But, unfortunately, the biggest problem for me was keeping that supply. Honestly, one item I sold, I found at local grocery store that cost $3.99+tax, and sold on eBay for $25-40. However, it was a seasonal item, only around for the summer, and I bought as many while I could but very quickly they were gone.

Yes if you are selling stuff that people want. You pay a percentage fee to ebay and maybe a couple dollars more depending on how you want to list. THe fee is not much at all, just a few bucks.
I don't sell stuff for a living but have sold a few things.

you can make good money on ebay if you are selling a desirable item. I have sold lots of things. I am considering making a career of it. Go to ebay and search on there for the selling fees. The percentage depends on how much your item sells for and how you list it.

Yes, since it is your property that is being sold it is illegal for eBay to take more than five percent (5%) of the sale. That being said eBay only takes 2 percent (2%) of the sale for itself, meaning you make 98% of the profit. The 2% deal means that if the price of the item sold is $1000, you make $980, and eBay gets $20. Hope this helps you.
