You might ask, "why are paintbrushes used for painting?" Metaphors are a tool the writer uses to evoke images in the readers' minds.

For example, a poet could write, "my love's eyes are blueish-grayish" which sounds pretty lame. A more expressive and interesting way to describe her eyes might be, "her eyes were the color of the north sea in summer" A phrase that is evocative of her temperament possibly as well as the color of her eyes.

A lot more information can be packed into a metaphor than in a straightforward sentence often. Plus they are more fun to read :-)

Metaphors and Similies are used to convey an idea that helps the reader emotionally connect with the poem. For example, If you came across the lines "She is pale" and "She's as pale as the moon" which one convey's a more vivid image?

We use them in every day life too, not just poetry. Listen to people talk and you'll hear them all over.

In general, literary elements are used in writing. It's just a more creative way of writing. Plus, it makes you think a little more.
