My computer is an Inspiron 1000 with 4 GB's left on the hard drive. The ram is 256 MB and has a 2.20 GHZ Intel Celeron processor.

Which Linux release would be best for this computer? (Has to be one you can use on a cd)

http://www.ubuntu.org has one that runs off the cd, so install is fairly small and they will send it just for your asking. Hope this helps and Happy New Year

A Live CD based system I know of you have the following choices:
Ubuntu pre-install desktop on CD
FreeBSD Live CD; forgot the name but there is one
Knoppix CD/DVD
there are few more but they are specialized to a specific use; last time I experiment with mutable CD toolkit it is Puppy Linux.

The best optimization that anyone done to Linux base code is 686; there was no change to anything after bbesides speed boost so no more optimization since then, that is Pentium 2 level so it is safe for you to use any on your Inspiron.

Knoppix loads as a live CD, so nothing changes on the desktop, and you can load windows or linux depending on whether the Knoppix CD is in the CD Drive.

Just about any version of Linux will do! It depends what you're looking for.

Personally I'd go with a Slackware 11 install. A custom install of most of the goodies will leave you with 3 Gb of free space.

If you're really looking to just use a LiveCD, then Knoppix or Ubuntu are great.

What are you trying to do with it? That will influence which Linux version to use.

In the meantime, try Knoppix ( http://www.knoppix.org ) or Ubuntu Live ( http://www.ubuntu.com ).
