No, but relative. "Heavy Metal" could be anything from like Quiet Riot to Megadeth. Very up tempo, aggressive and sometimes you can make out what the singer is saying. "Dark Metal" I will categorize into two sub-sections ;a)Death Metal, very fast, always a double bass drum, and guttural growling. Bands like I.H.R., Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation. b)Black Metal very slow, sometimes melodic, and they usually sing about Satan. Venom, Hellhammer(Celtic Frost) , early Slayer and Mercyful Fate.

I have never heard of dark metal,maybe there is a band which plays that sort of music,but you must be thinking about black,doom,death or gothic metal,those are pretty dark:)The main difference between those and heavy metal is the following:Heavy metal f*cking rules,kicks *** and blows your mind!HM has a soul,it means tradition,real values while dark metal genres are just mutated heavy metal.There!

Dark metal is for devil worshipers (cults) and heavy metal is like bands like White snake,Metallica,Panic!At the Disco,Good Charlotte,Fall out boy and such other rock bands.
