oh yeah, mcAfee is difficult to deal with. try official macafee forum at http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/index.php
they will have the correct answer.

It can be a *****. I deleted all the other elements of McAfee security suite, the had to search for and delete every file with either Mcafee or activescan in the file name. Some wont delete in one go: you have to go into the folders and delete the individual items as necessary. If this sounds ridiculously long winded, it is. I hope someone knows a quicker way- but this worked for me.

Reboot the system. Before Windows boots, press F8 on you keyboard. Choose safe mode from the menu. Once in safe mode, you can go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Add/Remove all the McAfee items there. Once done, reboot normally. Make sure to replace McAfee with something else for Virus Scanning, AntiSpyware and Firewall protection.
