I just bought a 1997 Acura Integra automatice. I don't know what does ( there is P, R, N, D4, D3, 1, 2) D4 and D3 means on the shift knob, does anyone know which one to use on the freeway and locally? How does it work?

d4 is the gear to use on the freeway. It allows the transmission to shift into overdrive giving you the best lileage. For slow speed around town driving you may find the engine runs better with less lugging in d3.

Sure, This is a four speed automatic, just like a three speed PRND2L, but with Overdrive D4. You should always drive in D4 and give the engine and transmission the best combination to work with. Using a lower gear only over revs the engine and wastes gas.

For all normal driving put the transmission in D4 also known as overdrive. This gives you the best gas mileage on your vehicle as it lets the vehicle engine run at lower speed while cruising. D3 is Drive and should be used if you are in the mountains or going up a long hill to avoid having the transmission shifing into and out of overdrive, which will damage the transmission. 2nd gear is for controlling the speed of your vehicle when going down a long steep hill. First gear should be used when going down a major grade, not really any use in a car. You can also use 2nd gear to start out on slick surfaces to help reduce wheel spin.

Put it in D4 and go. Don't worry about D1,2,3. P is park, R is reverse and N is Nuetral. D is drive. If you need more help you should probably take driving lessons. Don't bother using D3 ever...your car is desingned for D4 just use that one. Don't worry about city or highway....it's all the same when it comes to wear and tear. don't believe me?...just ask and dealer or adult who know how to drive.

i use D3 on the free way cuz the speed limit is like 65 but if you get over 4000RPM on the freeway in D3 change it to D4

You mentioned its an automatic meaning depending on your demand the car will automatically shift up and down. Leave it in D4 and it will do all the work for you.

Drive 3 only shifts up to third gear and drive four shifts all the way to fourth gear. on the freeway i would use drive 4. and in the city where it's stop and go i would use drive 3 so it would be a little easyer on the transmission so it don't just shift into 4th gear and have to hit the brakes again it just makes more wear and tear on it.

put it in d4 and leave it there on the freeway.. D4 is basically overdrive but driving in it locally won't hurt it either.

Just leave it in D4 and everything in the world will be good.
