believe it or not cannibalism is not and has never been common in Africa
the only case of cannibalism i have heard of in Africa is amongst a tribe native to the ituri rain forest
other instances were during various rituals and after wars
this was a very very long time ago
cannibalism is considered taboo in most traditional african societies
the majority of cannibalistic societies are found on islands way out in the pacific
nowhere near Africa

Though there are many, many instances of cannibalism around the world and throughout history, it has never really been established if there have EVER been any habitually cannibalistic cultures. It is likely that most stories of "tribes of cannibals" were concocted as justification for 'civilizing' (and subsequently enslaving or swindling) various tribes of people in Africa.
