Interviews with teachers and administrators! It's always fun to read about your teachers, school nurse, counselors, custodians, etc. Take photographs at your dances, in the library, before school, during a sporting event. Ask for student submissions of poems, short stories, essays. Conduct a poll and report the result. Try and get some local businesses to buy some inexpensive advertising and use it to fund the paper. Your local newspaper should be willing to donate - as well as your booster club, if you have one at your school. You can run a contest for the best post-game snack recipe. Surely one of your fellow students is an illustrator - ask him/her to draw a cartoon for every issue. You could have help wanted ads for parents and other businesses, in order for students to find part-time work (babysitting, local grocery store, etc.). There are a million things you could do with your newspaper!

Good for you - best of luck to you and your staff!

Sports and Competition briefs and articles were always a big seller in my school (a while back now). Photospreads also - a big hit. With featured articles, try to go beyond just typical school news and cover events and happenings in the community - its a great way to get some buzz going.

when i was first on a school newspaper my little column was on fun facts...or what you might call trivia. also...learn to delegate authority---don't do it all yourself and make sure the rules are very clear on what you can and can't print...like as in a teacher editor so you don't get into trouble with controversial subjects
