I have knee pain in both knees on the outsides of each kneecap. When running i can sometimes feel a crunch with severe pain. Also standing for long periods can cause pain.... the pain comes and goes and some days are better then others..... to me the pain seems to be more from bone then soft tissue. Any ideas what it may be?

I agree with seeing your doctor, but I do not think that your knee is "wearing away." I am an athletic trainer and I am guessing that you are most likely suffering from patellofemoral syndrome. This is common in runners and basically means that your kneecap, or patella, is not moving normally. This can irritate tissues surrounding the kneecap and cause pain. Start with reducing milage or crosstraining with elipticals or stationary bike for several days/weeks and icing for ~20 minutes after every exercise. If this does not relive symptoms, a referral to an athletic trainer (not a personal trainer) or physical therapist can give you exercises and stretches to help aleviate pain as well. Check out the websites below for more information.

Yes, the soft cushioning material in your knees is worn away. See a doctor, and he will clean it up for you. I had it done several years ago. I still experience pain from time to time, but a lot less than before. I'd suggest that you cut the running out, as it just puts more pressure on your knees.

if your hearing a crunchign sound as you say it means your knee is kinda wearing away. Have you gotten this looked at yet? i say let the doc take a look at it and see what hes gotta say. in the meantime, dont run and try and take it easy on ur knee.
