As a teenager, he used to be part of a gang of four who called themselves the 'Marauders'. Also part of the gang were James Potter, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. To help Lupin during his transformations into a werewolf, the other three became animagi (wizards who can turn into animals).

Being teenage boys, it was a bit of a game for them and they even came up nick-names for one another. James was 'Prongs' (he could turn into a stag, which has pronged antlers), Black was 'Padfoot' (he could turn into a dog, which has padded paws) and Pettigrew was 'Wormtail' (he could turn into a rat, which has a tail resembling a worm). Lupin took the nick-name 'Moony' because he was a werewolf affected by the moon.

Nicknamed "Wormtail", he became the Secret-Keeper for James Potter and his wife Lily Evans when Harry was a baby, in hopes that Lord Voldemort would pursue Black instead. However, Pettigrew betrayed the Potters to Voldemort in order to gain the Dark Lord's favour.

Because Peter transforms into a rat. His tail looks like a big fat worm. I think they mentioned the name Wormtail in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".

Because he's an animagus which he could transform from a regular human (Peter Pettigrew) into a rat whose tail looks like a worm. So he got nicknamed Wormtail.

Because he is a rat as an animangus and his tail is like a worm, it was a nickname that Harry's father and friend gave him, James Potter was Prongs, Peter was Wormtail, Sirius was padfoot, and Lupin was mooney
