ok. Here is a list:
Modern:
More Turned in
More Free Formed
More swaying
Less Strict
Ballet:
Stricter
Formed
Not so swayish
Similarities:
Require TONS of Strength
Requires a good healthy body
Requires Commitment
Requires the want to have fun. :-)
I love ballet so much! I don't really like modern, but thats just me. You should try both, and see which one you like better. They are very different movements, both wonderful artforms, and both fun.

Okay here i go....
Modern was recognized mainly in the years of the great depression. Women and men wanted to express themselves "freely" and some say that Modern dance is the visual reality check that gravity exsists whereas Ballet is the
illusion of zero gravity and then Jazz is the struggle between the two.
Basically Ballet Voganava and Classical styles is a set practice that is enphasizes on techniques ,vocabulary, and being light and airy where Modern dance (there are many different stylse ) Emphasizes on raw emotion and expressing oneself with or with out technique. Old school pioneers Denishwan,Graham, Dunham, Meirce, used parralel lines with legs and some had stiff arms and angular movements some used contractions and release and some spinal movements some taken from other cultures. You need to study the founders to fing what style best suits you. I prefer Limone because he is like melting and swinging freely then I love Dunham, because I love african dance so you really need to do some research!

What I have found with modern is that it is much more expressive than ballet. I say that because in ballet you are strictly conformed to a certain style, with specific symmetrical lines, and even a body shape that is associated with ballet dancers. In modern you are encourage to move along those same symmetrical lines, in a total opposite way. You're allowed to step outside of the box and put your own style and expression into the choreography. In my class, we do an exercise called add\subtract where one person starts a movement or pose and other class members add to it to see what we come up with. We sometimes use the shapes or movements that we come up with in the choreography. You may want to videotape yourself experimenting with both styles so that YOU can actually see the difference and determine which style of dance fits you best. Hope this helps!

Basically ballet is really structured and you have to wear balelt shoes. Modern is really loose and you usually dance barefoot. Also their origins are different...ballet came from court dancing in Europe it is alos used as a kind of drama. Modern originated much later and was developed to be free and express any emotion.

If you go to wikipedia.org and type in "modern dance" it will give you a lot of information. It basically goes on by telling you how modern evolved from ballet and what is the difference.
