Why does the screen on my laptop get dimmer when I unplug it? It's so hard to work with without the power supply! Please help!

This is normal power-saving behavior. You can change this permanently by going into your power settings, or temporarily by using the keyboard settings; there should be a blue Fn key and another key with a brightness symbol and an up arrow. You can use these keys to brighten your display while working on batteries.

Your battery may be dieing. Since you are used to the ultrabright screen you may want to purchase a high quality battery as this should resolve this problem.
