No, even advanced computers do not require the "down time" akin to dreaming that our human brains need to sort memories and information. Computers can be "on" 24/7 and therefore do not sleep and therefore do not dream.

But in case the "dream" P.K. Dick was referring was in the sense of "desire," then yes, AI with real thoughts would have actual feelings, since thoughts and feelings are very well the same thing. And if it was the custom at the time to take in the remaining live animals or substitute bio-mechanical versions as cherished pets, the AI androids would likely be no less superficial than us, being raised by us, and living among us. Think of a domesticated animal. It might long to be unbound, but to do so would be to abandon the life it has grown accustomed to, that humanity's civilization has given it. An animal doesn't do that, and neither would an android.

Commander Data did have feelings all along, otherwise he wouldn't move. The thought and accompanying behavior of "This action is better than that action" is a feeling.

This is of course is close to the the title of the novel that is the source material for Blade Runner, "do androids dream of electric sheep" the movie did not really explore this theme as much as the novel did, it merely presented the post world war three reality of animals mostly being extinct and artifical ones being status symbols. The android characters in blade runner didn't care about this manifestation of commodity fetishism but were simply after more life. Its been a long time since i read the novel but if an android or robots personality is programmed to mimic and fit in with the behavior of human socity then likely they would at least appear to also get into the current fad with if thats artifical animals then they may appear seek ownership of them. The emotional level of craving however that manifests itself in dreams is beyond any robot i can currently imagine so i would have to say no, not really maybe only in appearance.

Blade Runner was great. Although I'm not overly thrilled about the Director's Cut. The original theatrical version is much better.

The actual book title is "Do Androids dream of electric sheep", not Robots. ;-)

Scottc gets it wrong, real animals are the status symbol, to only own an electric animal is pathetic and needs to be kept secret, so when it breaks down, repair men come along acting like vets to try help maintain the charade.
