An editorial is called an editorial because the editor of a publication uses it to express a personal viewpoint. Count yourself lucky! You get to mouth off via your pen (or keyboard). Pick a topic and think about your view on it. Why do you hold that view? What is the opposing view? Why do you consider that invalid (or just plain wrong)?

Example: a social issue is poverty. Some people believe the poor are poor because of their own lack of abilities to rise above their situation (it's their own fault). Other people believe the poor are poor because society makes it hard for them to advance themselves, either through discrimination based on race, age or whatever (it's not their own fault, it's society's fault).

Good luck. Hope I helped you.

An editorial is pretty much a writer's take and opinion on something.

So, read your book find a topic that has some social relevance, and just go at it with your opinion on that topic. It likely doesn't have to include the text of what you read since it's an editorial and not an essay. So it's purely what YOU feel about that subject.

For example, you could read "The Scarlet Letter" and then do a piece about adultery, or about society's complete unwillingness to accept rehabilitated criminals into society.
