Yes. As long as you have the printer drivers (should be on the cd that came with the printer itself) installed and a usb cord for the printer to connect to the cpu.
You can also go the http://www.hp.com website to download the proper drivers (universal ones).

As long as it is compatible with your PC it will work. If the salesperson says it would be a waste of money, it probably is not compatible. They want to sell stuff remember!!! Email Dell support and ask if you don't believe the salesperson.

Yes, of course. Your accessories don't have to be the same brand as your pc. You will have no problems getting a HP, EPSON, LOGITECH, etc, etc, printer to work with your Dell or any other PC.

Hardware-wise, should work fine as long as the interface is USB or parallel. (I assume most or all retail PCs still come with a parallel port.) Operating system may make a difference, if you are running something other than Windows XP.

It basically depends on the operating system. As long as you are running Windows 98 SE or something newer, it should work just fine.
