technically its not straight-up jazz (lots of people think its fusion) but you can NEVER go wrong with medeski, martin and wood at a party. herbie hancock is also generally a good choice. if you get a chance, check out herbie hancock and the headhunters' version of watermelon man. you'll know it when you hear the strange tooting noises at the beginning.

just to put in my two cents, playing coltrane at a party will have all the guests constipated (especially if you play take 5), or cause them to have the distinct feeling of being in an elevator.

depends on waht kind of jazz ya want, i go old school, but i think im your looking for mellow stuff anything by miles davis quintet w john coltrane etc, early trane is good too, if your looking for something really old try lester young, a bti more popping, try charlie parkers bebop stuff, more electric try davis' 60s stuff like water babies, filies de kilimanjaro or bitches brew
