If you're interested in writing and directing it's essential that you read scripts, especially the one's you think are great.

You don't have to go to an expensive graduate school. Study great scripts. Some that have been published in book form should be at your library, ask. That'll save you some money.

I think screenplays are certainly worth having a look at.

It shows the actual craft involved & the deliberation & nuances involved in each film. I'd suggest also reading a range of plays to have a handle of the structure. This is sort of like how many of the best film actors will also be involved on the stage but from the writers perspective.

Try reading some works that are not on your list of favourites too, this will give you greater scope.

Good luck!

I like reading, and I read an awful lot, so maybe I'm biased!
I think they are worth reading. Particularly something like Memento! Sometimes the books have the original stage directions, which are helpful, and if you find a book with a good introduction (etc) you may get a clearer understanding of the film.

Gangs of New York has a good screenplay book. Also Red Dwarf least worst scripts is a bit of a laugh.

You'll only really know after you've read them and by then you may regret reading them if they're not worth your reading.
