I am doing a project on why we should stay in Iraq. Currently i know that there is a "Civil War" between the Shi'ites and the Suniis, and that the new government is not strong enough to stand on its own, but i cannot think of anything else. The paper is due soon so a quick response would be much appreciated.

As much as i think the war is a major error of judgement on behalf of the US Government there maybe some sense in staying a little longer, although the logic has nothing to do with the aims of the Bush Administration.

The major problem the Americans have now is if they pull out, other countries are likely to move in. The whole region (never that stable anyway) is going thru a major power shift since the US took Saddam off the payroll and fired him. Syria, Sudi Arabia, Turkey (esp the Kurdish people) and Iran are all casting eyes over the carcass of Iraq and it's wealth of natural resources.

Now the Americans are already bickering with Syria and Iran, they cannot afford to upset the Saudi's (because they get a lot of their oil from there). Throw in that Turkey doesn't want the Kurds to establish an independent homeland and have said they will use force to stop them and it all starts looking a bit ugly. - oh, and there is also that simmering tension between Iran and Israel, plus all the 'excitement' that having a lot of, ummm, passion followers of various religious flavours can bring to the mix.

Also complicating matters is the US has bases in Turkey and Saudi Arabia and those two states are seen as friends (ironic that the 9/11 hijackers were all saudi's - yet they invade Iraq - go figure). If the Saudi's took over Iraq and Turkey tried to stop them, which side does the US take (probably the Saudi's as they have the oil - hmmm).

Whilst i don't evny the mess the US is in (and it is their own fault they are in it) maybe, just maybe, leaving right now could make things far worse than they already are. Wish i had an answer.....

1. The US took out the country's government, and is therefore obliged to make sure a reasonably stable government replaces it. This is the "Pottery Barn" philosophy: "You broke it, you bought it."
2. Iraqi people of all walks of life are heroically struggling to produce a better Iraq. Police, politicians, judges, all kinds of people have lost their lives at the hands of terrorists and assassins. Don't forget the massive participation in their first free national election, in the face of terrorist threats. They deserve out support.
3. At this time, Iraq is the focus of an international conflict. This conflict is between Islamo-fascism and the forces of freedom and democracy. Terrorists from many countries are focusing their efforts on Iraq; if the US leaves, they will be greatly encouraged.
4. Improved intelligence gathering may be part of the reason the US has not had another terrorist attack on US soil. But another part of the reason is that our enemies are concentrating their attention on Iraq now. If the US leaves, they will have more ability to attack the US at home again.

Wrong. The civil war was started by the American occupants. The "new government" is a puppet regime installed by the US war criminals. However, you should stay in Iraq to show the entire world how weak, greedy and hypocritical you are! Try invading a real country with real anti-aircraft systems or nuclear warheads.... No, you can only bully Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine and other poor nations. Write a paper about that for a change!!!

with there fighting each other and there of the same basic religion. then I assume that Saddam had to do what he did to control the country. If Americans revolted and took up arms against the feds they would have troops shoot to kill and lock up people just like he did.he did it the Arab middle eastern Way. because that's the way they do it.that's the way he controlled his country. the evil bastard.he was an evil stupid man. he was arrogant and dangerous.I am glad he is gone. I am not glad that about half a million Innocent Iraqis have been killed so far.But we should not leave till they have a strong government that has sufficient military and policemen to control the masses.and we should first make sure those people have lights and water running all the time.and we should help them in all the social services. because if there happy with there living conditions then they may not fight so much.they need stability. in all aspects of there life's, we owe it to them for attacking there country and killing so many innocents.I pray for them all and our troops.

We need to stay in Iraq until the Iraqi forces and their government are able to take the reins and stabilize the country on their own. The Iraqi troops need to be trained so they can protect and secure the country. If we leave too soon and quit (as the liberals are pressing for us to do), then we will have left the country without completing the job we went there to do, which is to make it a free, secure and prosperous country. Also, if we pull out too soon, then our troops that died for the sake of serving THEIR country as well as for the safety and security of the Iraqi people, then they have died in vain. The liberals don't see it that way, but the deaths of the troops there will all be for nothing if we leave without the job being finished first. It takes patience and endurance to complete a mission such as the stability and freedom of Iraq.

What else is there to do? We should stay there in so that the American government can continue to flex its demonic power. Iraq, thanks to George Bush, has become America's second Vietnam. Thnak you Georgie. But on a more serious note, if we do pull out now, Iraq will surely fall to Iran who would waste little time invading them and then, we would have no other choice but to send our troops back to "save" them again and to save a little face with the other world nations. (If that's even possible now)

The middle east is a hot bed of terrorism. To leave now before we do more house cleaning will allow controlled growth of terrorism. It will grow, they will again attack us here and then we just end up going in there to fight one more time.

We must make sure that the middle east is stable before we pull out, if not all of these people have died for not reason.

....If we stay in Iraq, who is going to protect us in our own country? Bush is busy sending more and more troops, he needs to send himself.... We have SERIOUS issues in the U.S. and while the U.S. is so busy concentrating on the war in Iraq, the crazy, sick minded terrorists may be planning to get us, it's sad but there are crazy people out there...... We need to defend our own country, things have been the way they are in the Middle East far before Bush and any other president, IT'S NOT GONNA CHANGE NOW!!!!

interesting paper subject. what class is it for?

i would actually say that we shouldn't stay in iraq BECAUSE there is a civil war. a civil war is meant for a country to battle its problems out on it own. in vietnam and korea, we "helped" in their civil wars. look where it put them. we need to learn from the mistakes of the past.
