I heard something about button, but I'm not convinced it's true.

I meant "something about the buttons that go on a certain side depending on the gender."

If the buttons are on the left, it's a women's jacket. If they're on the right, it's a mens.

You can also take into consideration length (women generally have shorter torsos) and width/width shape (women are generally thinner and curvier) and neck size (men generally have thicker necks).

I would go by fit, comfort, construction, fabric and the look. Some women I know chose to wear a men's jacket so they can get their several shirts (including sweats) under it all. If you do that, might need to go to a tailor and have the sleeves altered.

Generally, it is the buttons that would tip you off immediately. Women's button right placket over left; however, sometimes it is unisex (buttons on the men's side and jacket is in the women's dept.). THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR IS FIT AND QUALITY. If the sleeves are too long, then it's not for you (possibly a men's pattern was used by the manufacturer -- even if buttons are on the women's side). The length might be a tip off. A men's jacket might be longer in the torso.

It's true; women's buttons are on the left and mens are on the right.
