I gave birth to my baby boy five days ago via cecarian. Dr gave me stool softners which I need because I've yet to go with there help. But my son is pooping all the time. I mean pooping we have to change his clothes and all. Do you think the stool softners are passing through my breast milk?

Congrats on the baby and on your decision to breastfeed!

This is normal. Breastfeed babies poop . . . a lot. Don't worry, he will start pooping less often as he gets older.

Although, if you would like, try asking your doc uif you can take some fiber supplament (like bebefiber?) instead.

And for future reference, here is a website about common drugs and how safe they are for pregnant and nursing moms, that you might want to add to your favorites.

Anything you ingest is going to affect your breast milk. There is probably a warning to that effect on the stool softener instructions. Always take extra care because what ever you eat or drink (even aspirin) can be passed on to your son.

no probably not. stool softeners will just make your stool soft. it doesn't mean that you will have more bowel movements. newborns poop A LOT---especially the breastfed ones. Its normal. Enjoy your baby and the wonderful days ahead!

A 5 day old breastfed newborn should be pooping a lot.
It should probably be yellow, seedy and very soft/runny at this stage.
He will probably be pooping during/after each feeding.

Unfortunately, that's what babies do.
Stool softeners are unlikely to be the cause of that!

I really recommend speaking to your doctor about this.
