I have tried loading Netgear DG834G wireless router unsucessfully. I noticed that the network card seems to be set to PPPoE whilst I understand AOL UK uses PPPoA

Its the broadband connection which is PPPoA or PPPoE, not the network card. Any network card will work with a Netgear router.

In terms of configuring the router for your AOL broadband there are 2 easy options:

1. Use the Netgear router wizard and it will automatically detect the correct settings. This wizard will run automatically the first time you access the router from your PC (http://192.168.0.1). If you've previously used the router and the wizard doesn't run automatically, so a master reset on the router and then try again. You'll need to manually enter your AOL login details but be careful - you MUST enter your AOL username in lower case.

2. Alternatively somewhere on the AOL site is a downloadable program which will automatically configure the Netgear router for you from start to finish. This should take away all the hassle.

You don't use the network card to connect dirctly to AOL, the network card connects to your modem/router and it connects to AOL

There should be no problem with this any router should handle PPPoE or PPPoA but you may need to change the settings on the router

Yes, within the basic setup page of the router you should be able to change it to work with PPPoA. I have the same router.

You may need to speak to AOL though and register you MAC address with them or you may not be able to connect.

The PPPoA i believe only dictates the connect type to the internet not the connection type from the pc to the router.

this shouldnt be an issue, getting routers to work with aol can be a pain at the best of times, i recenlty left aol, as they were pretty poor.
