Chaim Potok.

All authors have a beautiful skill, but I think Chaim Potok had mastered the skill by writing about what he knew. He was an Rabbi and grew up in New York and was schooled in an Orthodox yeshiva. I have read four of his books and am working on a fifth and four of them are about Orthodox Jews living in New York, basically the sort of life he had grown up with, although many different characters and problems. He incorperated many things of his life into his books, which made the stories breathe life. I just finished In the Beginning by him and found an interview with Chaim Potok about the book and was surprised that many things in the book, such as the father's occupation, how the mother learned of this event, and so on, were real events from his life.
So, to paraphrase, Chaim Potok breathes so much life into his books and is the best author, in my opinion.

Of all time: Geoffery Chaucer. He managed to navigate 2 unruly kings, AND criticize most of the contemporary social structure without losing his head. And we still read him 700 years later.

Currently: Neil Gaiman. He's the brains behind The Sandman series of graphic novels, but he also writes sci-fi/fantasy. Very insightful and VERY well-read for a product of the 20th Century.

Tolkien, Judith Tarr, LE Modessit, Anne McCaffrey, James Michener, Ken Follett, Irving Stone....all complex writers who dare to care about what they write rather than what they'll make by writing. All with totally fleshed out characters with depth, pognant, fragile human feelings.
