how do you get the smell out of your house after a rat dies in the wall?

We are not positive and we don't know which wall it's in but there is a very foul smell coming from the bathroom to the rest of the house.

The first thing to check is if the traps in the drains all have water in them that will eliminate sewer gas as an option. The rat is probably under the tub. If there is access shine a flashlight under the tub to see if you can see it. Straighten out a wire clothes hanger and make a U shape at the end, drag him out and get rid of him. If you can't do that, you have to cover up the smell. Get something strong and leave the bathroom door closed except when you use it. Usually the smell is gone in a week

I have heard that you put a bowl of vinegar in the room where the smell is and a few other rooms that are close and the vinegar will absorb the odor and you won't smell it anymore. I haven't tried it myself but that's what I have heard and read numerous times.

sewer gas maybe? Do all the drain lines have traps on them? Is there a washing machine drain thats open and not trapped or capped??

We did have something die in a wall inside a closet once, in an old farmhouse, but I can't remember what we did about it...waited I think, lol.

Ariation.....letting the area ventilate as much as possible. I had a squirel die in my attic and it took months for the smell to go away. It did not matter how much I scrubbed the wood...
