Euglena needs photosynthesis to capture sunlight energy and use it to make glucose for food.

Euglena needs cellular respiration to break down glucose molecules to release energy (and make ATP) for its cell processes.

If the cell could not respirate it could not aquire the oxygen needed for energy production, and would die.
