I'm living abroad now and just heard that the post office in the US will be closed because of Ford's death -- I suppose federal offices will be closed too? What's going on? Does anyone think this is just weird? Isn't the US supposed to be a republic of equals? (Just joking, I know that's all propaganda.)

But damn, it's peculiar.

Yeah, I remember Reagan. I was pretty shocked then too. I'm 42. I have the impression that this 'dead presidents' thing is getting worse each time one dies. Could be wrong, of course.

Respect & reverence? I admit I don't have much respect for US presidents, let alone reverence. You have to be too bloodthirsty to be president, I'm afraid.

But even if I'm wrong about that, I think all citizens should have a healthy sense of skepticism and irreverence regarding their elected leaders. Especially presidents -- the amount of power concentrated in their hands is growing frighteningly large.

Hard to imagine that kind of reverence ever being given to someone like Ireland's Bertie Ahearn, I have to say. Didn't happen when corrupt Charles Haughey recently died either, though some tried it. I think that's a good thing.

Hm. Its called respect. Reverence. Look them up.

Although we are all equal in a LEGAL sense, is there something wrong with giving credit or showing respect to an individual who went above and beyond as a Citizen? Someone who made a difference on a grander scale of our country's history. What do YOU bring to the table? He gave back to his country, he LED a NATION....would YOU like to carry that weight? We have our ways of thanking people for that, even when its posthumous. As a country, we're recognizing that something important happened. It has nothing to do with Royalty or demi gods, Silly.

They always do this when a president dies and if you haven't tuned in they sure aren't putting President Bush on the pedestal! Our banks were open and I was glad not to get any bills today!
