yes it is fine to let your car coast on neutral. it will not hurt anything and will actually save you money on fuel.

On an automatic, No. You will damage your transmission over a period of time. Also it is harder of the other systems, like brakeing. The only thing you are saving is a little money of fuel, but for the penny you save, you have to spend $100 to fix the other problems it causes. If you drive a standard, it is ok, because the transmission is set up differently.

No. Its not good on the transmission, plus you loose the engine/transmission braking capabilities when your going down hill and put your car in neutral the vehicle will speed up and you could possibly loose control of the vehicle. The transmission will start shifing even though the vehicle is in neutral and will cause internal transmission damage because the transmission will overheat and it also causes the transmission to overspeed internally wearing out costly parts.

I do it and I get up to around 90mph down this hill where I work and coast like 5 miles. It saves me gas 90mph at 1,000rpm. I've had no problems and I've been doing this for years. But I have a stick shift. I don't know about autos.

NO!

1. Some automatics can be damaged

2. It's illegal some places.

3. your brakes wear out sooner.

4. you could lose control (that's why it's illegal)

All these guys who say they are saving gas forget about the extra money they are spending on brakes, rotors, etc etc. GAS is cheaper and easier to replace than brakes.

it is ilegal in some provinces, it dosen't save any gas as it will take more to restore momentem, and it will decrece your braking life ; not to mention the saftey aspect of coasting.is not as strong w/o a active drivetrain.
