People like Oprah? I thought she was rather one of a kind, myself.

In her case, the money would probably go to taxes or to advertising or PR budget. That's what it is, after all: public relations.

But there are wealthy people who really are philanthropists, and they are to be admired and respected. The most appreciated charitable donations are always anonymous, however, so that no one is expected to make a big fuss or get burdened with gratitude.

I think it is more of an ego but there are some genuine people like Warren Buffett who donate. Those down to earth people I respect. Oprah and Dr. Phil are more ego driven.
