My girlfriend, and I, have been debating the issue. My thought, is that, it would pose a securtiy threat to haul his body around the country. Not to mention, I really don't think he would want to go for the ride. My position is that we are just holding the memorial service in his honor and that it wouldn't be honorable to him to travel cross country to apease our need to show our gratitude.

His body is actually in the casket. It is honorable to him [and appropriate] to allow people to say their good-byes.

President Ford planned every aspect of his memorial and burial. He is from my home town of Grand Rapids and has always been very proud of his roots here. He is in the casket, and his remains have been from California to Washington DC and home to Grand Rapids to honor and respect his and his families wishes. He will be buried on a site that has been waiting for him for many years near the Gerald Ford Library, and his wife Betty will join him there some day.
