What is "Aachen" doing in an English dictionary? One doesn't normally expect to see proper names in one, unless they have taken on an additional meaning - like Hoover, where the surname has come to mean a vacuum cleaner. Aachen isn't in any of my dictionaries. Are you sure you are looking in a dictionary? If it's a book with lots of maps at the beginning, followed by a list of place-names, then it's an atlas!

Andrew f has summed this up approriately! and Assaye10 is correct too.
A is a word otherwise you could not use it in a sentence. Proper names are not words they are names therefor Mr Questioner - YOU ARE WRONG!

"A" is always the first word in the dictionary.
Aachen isn't a word. It's the name of a German town, so you won't find it in a dictionary.
The second word after "A" is usually "Aardvark".

Cool. While we're at it, name another word off the top of your head that starts with X besides Xylophone and X-rays.
