1) Multiply across by a least common multiple to eliminate denominator:

12(x/3 + x/4 = 1)
4x + 3x = 12
7x = 12

Ans: x = 12/7

2) Multiply across by "a" to eliminate denominator:
a(1/a + 2/a + 3/a + 4/a = 5)
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 5a
10 = 5a

Ans: a = 2

3) 4*5*q = 5 * p * 2
20q = 10p
We know pq != 0 (which means neither term can be zero)
We want the ratio of p / q, so divide the right side by q, and the left side by 10.

Ans: p / q = 2

Three in one, huh?
1) x/3 + x/4 = 1
Multiply each term by 12: 4x + 3x = 12
combine terms on left: 7x = 12
divide both sides by 7: x = 12/7

2) 1/a + 2/a + 3/a + 4/a = 5
Multiply each term by a: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 5a
Combine terms on left: 10 = 5a
divide both sides by 5: a = 2

3) 4*5*q=5*p*2
simplify: 20q = 10 p
divide both sides by 10: 2q = p
divide both sides by q: p/q = 2

1. First: eliminate fractions > take the denominators and multiply them by everything:

3(4)(x/3) + 3(4)(x/4) = 3(4)1

Sec: cancel "like" terms on both sides > cancel 3 and 4:

4x + 3x = 12
7x = 12

Third: solve for "x" by isolating it/keeping it on one side > divide both sides by 7:

7x/7 = 12/7
x = 12/7

2. follow the same format from #1

3. Rewrite the info in numerical data piece by piece >

4(5)(q) = 5(2)(p)
20q=10p

First: solve for "p/q" by dividing both sides by "q" >

(20q)/q = (10)(p/q)
20 = (10)(p/q)

Sec: divide both sides by 10 >

20/10 = [(10)(p/q)]/10
2 = p/q
p/q = 2

Clear the denominators by multiplying by 12.

x/3 + x/4= 1
4x + 3x = 12
7x = 12
x = 12/7
