A solar eclipse occurs when the shadow of the moon is cast onto the part of the Earth where you are. A Lunar eclipse is when the shadow of the Earth is cast onto the moon.
It is important to note that due to the relative sizes of the moon and the Earth, the moon's shadow will never completely cover the Earth, whereas the Earth's shadow can completely cover the moon.

IT looks like this question is pretty much answered, but this is another interesting fact about a lunar eclipse. As earth's shadow passes over the moon, the moon doesn't turn black i.e. not visible. Instead, it turns red, as red light passes through the earths atmosphere & continues to illumunate the moons surface.
