Currently in a Supervisory role it pays well, and isn't too taxing, but I hate it. Im only 23 and have been in my current job for just over a year. I'm more of a hands on type of guy. Maintenance / service engineer is where all my skills are.

Of course you should'nt carry on doing a job you hate, well not for a minute longer then you have to, lifes too short to just put up with things.
You're only 23 you have a lot of working years in you yet, :-) and would'nt it be better going to work with a smile on your face?....
Start looking for the type of job you really want to do, something you're good at and more importantly something that will make you happy.
As soon as you have found it, hand your notice in, take a big sigh of relief, have a night on the town maybe a couple of shandy's to get you bladdered in celebration of your new job, and then onwards and upwards.
I've been were you are, about 15 years ago, and for the last 14 long long years I stayed in that job. Only a year ago i thought sod it, left and went back to college at the grand old age of 38.
I'm happier now than I've been in a long time, probably about 15 years..... I can't believe that I was stupid enough to keep making my own life so miserable and boring.

I hope you don't do the same.
I hope you find that dream job, GOOD LUCK

Well if you hate a job you are going to have a miserable life! Seeing as you have a supervisory job, it will look great on your cv and you have more chance of doing something you love. If you have no commitments go for something else. I would love to have the opportunity to get a job I love but I can only have a part time job at the moment because of kids. I wouldn't put money as the top priority, doing something you love but not paid well is better than doing something you hate and getting a good pay check.

Why carry on. You could always take on a part time course training for something that you really want to do. If you keep on with the job you have now that will mean you'll still have money coming in unless you have enough to support yourself while you train for something else! Or why not just apply for a job that you would like. If you don't do anything now then ten, or even five years, down the track you'll be wishing you had changed jobs and will be annoyed at the missed opportunities. You are in charge of your life so do something NOW!! Good Luck. I hope you find a job that you love lol

Life is too short to be doing something you don't like, even if it pays the bills and puts food on the table. If you want a career in maintenance / service engineer as you say, then maybe you could go to college and learn those skills. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Actually I think there are a lot of people who really enjoy their jobs. I can't stand mornings in general so I don't look forward to work, but if I could wake up in a good mood then I would enjoy going to my job.

Life is too short. Some people don't want the pressure and stress of a "good career", and should take an alternative that suits them better. If you're better at service engineering, if you don't enjoy the duties of supervising, then the choice is obvious. You can't put a square peg in a round hole. Stupid to try.

If you hate your job, and would rather be doing something else, before you quit you need to make a plan and put it in motion so that it will put you in a positon to quit your current job.

Before you quit you need to at the very least, have a plan as to what you will do.

Do you have enough money to carry you through until you find another job? Though this is important, sometimes you just have to move on before you are ready.

Long term, find something you like.

You can check out this site dealing with sales, which could be coupled with engineering going to customer sites and selling them on your equipment and such.

PS...Sales engineers make a very nice income.

If you dread going to work every morning, then it's time to move on to something new. If maintenance and service engineer is your skills and interest, then go for it. Just make sure you have a job in line before quitting the other job.

No, really get out and re-train whilst you are still young enough.

It's great that you have supervisory experience, maybe you can put it to use in a more hands-on job, where you can still be involved in practical work, but you can put your supervising skills to good use, and hopefully get paid a bit better too.

I don't know many people who really love their job (except me but I'm weird), most people think work is OK, but if you really hate it get out and find something you will enjoy more. There is absolutely no point in staying there and being miserable.

Hope you find something suitable soon. Good luck.

If you're a supervisor you have a little more job security than the average grunt (like me).
It's probably best to reduce hours of work and try and get a qualification to take you further in your field of interest.
Plus - doing it this way ensures that you don't throw away a safe job (even though you hate it) for something that's difficult to get into.

That's my penny in the pot - do what you like really dude, only got one life!

If I were you I would look for something else (obviously don't leave your present job till you find something).

Life is way too short to be unhappy. You spend the majority of your time working, so it is important to do something that satisfies you.

Somebody once said to me about my job, "when you stop smiling, get out". It is very true, and something that I have never forgotten.

Hope you find what you are looking for - good luck!
