If you are regularly constipated, you may have to consult a doctor to see if there is any internal problem.
People do get constipated sometime or the other. The common cause is lack of adequate water and fiber intake. It is necessary to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables, as raw as possible (properly cleaned), reduce the extent of red meat in the diet, and drink atleast 8 glasses of water in a day.
Try eating some dried prunes or raisins at night, soaked in water for a couple of hours before consumption. Drink some 2 glasses of water befoe going to bed (unless you have a problem of frequent urination during night that disturbs your sleep). If you have a copper vessel, pour some water in it, keep it for a few hours and drink that water, as it helps to loosen the stools. Certain vegetables have a lot of fiber and these should be preferred so that the fiber adds bulk to your stools and helps in evacuation. Avoid drinking coffee or alcoholic drinks.
Do not take laxatives as a matter of course as frequent use of laxatives is habit forming and harms the inner lining of the intestines. Take laxatives on medical advice and dont exceed the dosage or frequency. Laxatives are to be used sparingly.

You can take some tpe of laxative. The only problem with it is that it takes anywhere from 6-12 hours for it to work... but it helps 100%!!!
Just be sure that 6-12hrs after taking the laxatives you are somewhere where you can sit on the toilet for a while =P

Prunes usually do the trick for me. To prevent it, drink more water and eat more fiber, fruits and veggies, etc. Pregnancy and especially prenatal high-iron vitamins usually make it worse.

prune juice is a good natural alternative, or you could try a laxative or stool softener such as senokot.
