I saw on tv this morning that OPRAH has started a school for girls in africa. You think she would start here and then go abroad to sort out others. This might tell you something about how she feels about her own people in the USA. Sorry but I dont blame her for helping someone who knows what its like to not have anything.

The line of thinking in your question shows the pure ignorance and cluelessness that many American people have about the poor conditions in other countries especially Africa.

America has a public school system. We have a free education, and medical clinics. The African education system pales in comparsion to even our worst. Inner city children get tons of money donated to them, food stamps, welfare checks, all kinds of things handed too them...AND THEY DO NOT APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!!

Sorry to generalize here, but I am tired of inner city America parents looking for handouts. You have a free education and don't take advantage of it. Maybe if some of them would have taken advantage of it, they would know why she would choose to built a school in Africa.

I've sponsored children in both the U.S. and third world countries, and my third world children are SOOOOOOOO much more grateful because basic neccessities are hard to come by. They are extremely poor, so poor that most Americans have no clue how they live.

My American poor children, instead of asking for basic neccessities, wanted things like fancy electronic games or cell phones, etc. or they end up dropping out of school, getting pregnant and what not. So I totally understand what Oprah is saying.

People in third world countries, appreciate everything we take for granted. And I applaud Oprah for building a school for girls in Africa, an AIDS ravaged country. American women have more than enough opportunity to make something of themselves in this country, but many particularlly those of color (like myself), choose to squander it.

I for one think the money will be of better use and appreciated more in South Africa. There are already schools in the US, but schools in South Africa aren't like the US. And it's hard for students to even go to school when they don't have the clothes or the food to even feed themselves.

Tell me what you think Oprah opening a school would do here in the US? The problem with education in the US is NOT money and not lack of funding.

"This might tell you something about how she feels about her own people in the USA" -- And what exactly do you think she feels?

Besides, Oprah is doing things ALL THE TIME for young, middle aged and old people in the US! I cannot understand why someone would actually be mad that she is setting up a school for the girls of South Africa.

I agree with oohLa. The USA does not need any more private schools!! Africa is in need of schools, supplies, clean water, and education about AIDS and AIDS prevention. She is giving these young women a chance to excel in life, and to help them make their own country a better place. Oprah helping these young girls does not say anything about how she feels about her own people. Yes she is American but she's African too, so you can't blame her for wanting to reach back to her roots and give back to them too. She has done enough work in American and I'm quite sure she isn't done yet.

If you read about why she did it, it might make sense and you may not be so offended. To summarize, Oprah said she is tired of visiting our inner city schools and listening to kids whine about not having an iPod or new shoes...but when she visited Africa (where most females are treated horribly) and asked the kids about their wishes and dreams, they wanted to be able to go to school. To me, that shows how little respect our country has for education. So she decided to spend her money and build a school for girls. She hand picked the new students, the uniforms, bed linens, everything. This project has been in the making for years.

She can do what she wants to do, don't worry about her least she is doing something not sitting around being jealous and putting others down. If you ain't making a difference sit down in the corner and be quiet you have no right to say anything about what she does. Love Oprah.

Doesn't the US have enough private schools?

I would think she's trying to make a difference in a place that's overlooked and where her efforts would be most keenly felt. Do you know what the literacy rate in Africa is like? It's not good.

Because kid's everywhere other then Africa are selfish. If a child in Africa were asked what they wanted. They would say an Education.

If you asked some one in another Country such as England/Canada/U.S they would say an Ipod.

Let her put it in Africa. I wouldnt send my kids to it if it was here in America in my home town. I can just imagine the stipulations and curriculum that such a school would have. No thank you. The further away from America she keeps her crap the better.
