If the noose is put on correctly and the control fall (rope length) is figured right then for a partial moment (less than a second -go look at a watch tick off a second) you would sense pain. After that moment you will break the neck and go unconscious. Three to 8 Min.. later you will die of suffocation. If the neck does not break you will gag and suffocate to death over those 3 to 8 min.

Only if the victim is lucky, During the early usage of hanging it was not uncommon for the person being executed to have their friends or family to hang onto their legs to speed the process when the neck was not broken. There have been cases where the rope had broken and they had to do it over. The plan is for the neck to be broken, this is one of the reasons the large knot was placed to the side of the head, in hopes that it would cause the head to snap to one side breaking the neck.

Yes, it is instantenous, only when the body is dropped with the noose around the neck. The weight of the body will cause the neck to snap instantly. The result: Quick death. However, if someone is hanged by pulling the rope up with the noose around the condemned's neck, then he will die slowly and painfully by asphyxiation as he is lifted from the ground.

No it is not instant death. He may pass out and feel no pain but his heart will beat about eleven times before his brain gets the message that, "Hey dude you are dead".
I think it was Gary Gilmore in idaho or one of the mid-western states that he chose the firing squad instead of hanging. According to the Doctor his heart beat seven times before his brain said what I said above. They say drowning is horrible, but to committ suicide that way as I know a person that did It only takes one swallow of water and you will not take the second breath. it is the same in a house fire. I was a almost victim of that. I placed some popcorn in the microwave and thought I had timed it at three minutes. I hit thirty minutes and passed out on the sofa. What woke me I will never know. The fire alarm did not go off as it was in the hall. When I woke and stood up the smoke was lingering in the air about three feet off the floor. I took one breath and cold not take another. If that microwave had got one breath of oxygen I would not be typing this.

Hanging causes separation of the spinal cord from the brain which results in loss of communication so like someone pointed out, the brain cannot tell the lungs to 'breathe' and eventually the lack of oxygen causes cell death, but even before that the person dies soon after the neck is broken.

I thought that the modern form of hanging was supposed to break the neck and kill almost instantly but the older form (hoisting the person as opposed to dropping them) suffocates instead. I guess that's just what they tell you though - I don't know for sure!

No it's not instantaneous. A mortal wound is inflicted instantly, but you die only from suffocation which takes a few minutes. It's a pretty bad way to die.
