angle a+angle b=180.
angle a+[4(angle a)+5]=180
5(angle a)+5=180
5(angle a)+5-5=180-5
5(angle a)=175
[5(angle a)]/5=175/5
angle a=35
and angle b=4(angle a)+5
b=4(35)+5
b=140+5
angle b=145
the answer is d.
to check all you have to do is add angle b and angle a and see if you get 180. 145+35=180

The definition of supplementary angles is
Two angles are called supplementary angles if the sum of their degree measurements equals 180 degrees. One of the supplementary angles is said to be the supplement of the other.

So another way to state this is:
one angle = x
another angle = 4x + 5 (five more than 4 times the first angle)
What are the two angles?
We know that the sum of the two angles is 180.

So restating the question, it becomes
x + (4x + 5) = 180

Solving for x
5x + 5 = 180
5x = 175

x = 35
4x + 5 = 145 (or d)

Answer is a -> 35

Arrive at this by using the following 2 equations:

4a + 5 = b (provided) ---> (1)
a + b = 180 (because they are suplimentary) --> (2)

From (2), b = 180 - a
Substituting this in (1) yields:
4a + 5 = 180 - a
=> 5a = 175 ==> a = 35

They have to add up to 180 degrees.
35*4+5=145
b=145
a=35

a + b = 180
b = 4a + 5
a + (4a + 5) = 180
a + 4a + 5 (-5) = 180 (-5)
5a = 175
5a/5 = 175/5
a = 35

a + b = 180
35 + b = 180
35 + b (-35) = 180 (-35)
b = 145

the answer is D

supplmentary means they add up to 180 degrees.

so...

a+(4a+5)=180
5a+5=180
5a=175

a=35
b=(4(35)+5)=145

35+45=180

so...

the answer is d.
