First of all, I believe it is a matter of pride that professionals go out and play their best. You know playing for a draft choice is not always a good policy(just ask theLions and Cardinals who are annual losers) . Losing games on purpose for a better pick is unprofessional, unethical, and gives a bad name to those who do it. Getting good draft choices is important as well but you have to proceed forward or you are only going in circles or in place and wasting your assets.

Those players are playing for their jobs. Take the 49er's for instance. They made almost the playoffs, but their are a some player on that team that will not be there and if you quit playing hard you will be one of them. If they get better draft picks one of those draft picks may take your job.
Also by playing hard you can work on some of your problem so next year you will have fewer.
Some fans believe that if you are not going to win just lose to get better draft picks. But if you do that you will never build the chemistry need to have a good team.

usually the top 5-10 picks are going to be very good players anyway. look at last year reggie bush was not selected #1 and the worst team should have drafted him. so i think you should play hard as possible its football not some pussy sport show you have some heart and plus if your in the bottom half of teams you dont have to be the worst team to get a great draft pick most of the time the #1 pick is a bust example tom brady or terrell davis drafted 4th round or later and davis was a 2 time super bowl champ and brady is 3 time. look at the top draft bust ryan leaf, joey harrington, akili smith just to name a few

In the early 80's it used to be only 6 teams per conference but there were only 23 teams at the time also. I would love to see the NBA go to a 60 game season with 12 teams in the playoffs to make the regular season more meaningful but it will never happen.

It is just natural for a team to play its hardest. What motivates these teams is the same idea that motivates anyone to play well in, say, a game of backyard football or an office softball league: pride, competitiveness, and an instinct to win. Also, these guys will make money for their next contract based on how well they play, even without winning. Sometimes they even play for financial incentives this year.

If the team did not make the play-offs, then the coaches' and players' jobs are in jeopardy. They all need to do their best or they will be unemployed next year. The team also needs to keep putting on a good show and keep selling tickets. There is still money at stake.

logically they should lose. the lions ruined their shot at#1 pick with a meaningless win. But of course nobody will do that. Even if the coaches tell them to the players have pride and respect for the game. Thats how it should be.

They have a job, and get graded like everyone that has a job. So if they don't play hard they should lose that job. There is always someone willing to play hard for a spot on a NFL rooster.
