The more 'positive' things you can say, the more it will irritate the negative people. Negative people hate anyone who is always positive and cheerful...try to see the good in all people, even when it's really hard to see. Good luck! ;)

Just let them rant on until they finish, then politely ask if they are finished. If so, just walk away. If they demand an answer, just ask them "what kind of response are you looking for?" If they press you, go ahead and recap the rant for them (politely).
It totally takes the wind out of their sails, because they're looking for an argument, or trying to make you feel bad, and instead they end up looking foolish themselves.
While they rant, just keep thinking about that resume you have posted on Monster.

Don't say anything but Good Morning or Good Evening this hurts a mean person more than anything in the world when you are nice to them. As my Dad used to say kill em with kindness!

Say : Hey do you need a HUG ?
I know its easier said than done but some people will actually back off alittle if you say this for they get a hint that perhaps they are being a prick.

keep bringing him/her a tea or coffee and have a really evil grin on your face as you hand them it and say "enjoy" as evilly as possible, if that fails, kick him in the nuts.
