check all plugs are connected, drivers installed and working, maybe a defective soundcard, if it is part of the motherboard youll need a bios update...

Just to be helpful, next time it's better to say what sort of computer and speakers you have, but here goes. It also helps to know if the speakers are new, used or how they're powered, but most are powered by a DC converter, sometimes called and AC adapter, go figure.
Anyway, the sound device on your computer will either be built into the motherboard or will be a card, meaning a circuit board installed as an add on. There are always multiple plugs; microphone, line in, line out, speaker out, digital out or some combination, but always speaker out and it's symbol is usually a series of circles with an arrow pointing away from the center. This is if all is well.
See if your speakers require an adapter, a power supply, if it's not present you'll have to get one. If the light on the speakers lights up, you know it's a hardware problem with your computer's sound device. This could be a couple of different things. Check and see if your sound device is shown by right clicking on My Computer, then click the Properties. Use the tabs on the dialogue and go to Hardware, click Device Manager. You're sound device will be listed under Sound, Video and Games, or something like that. If you don't see a sound device (Sound Blaster, ESS, VIA, Intel, whatever) the drivers aren't installed for the device and that will require downloading a driver from the Internet, best from the manufacturer of the device.
It can get more complicated from there and it may be best to consult a computer tech if you have one in the vicinity. Best thing is to check for the simple things like power, connections first, then move on.

hey theres lots of possible problems which would cause the speakers not to work, so i'll try to keep it basic

first off, make sure the connector is plugged in to the right jack on the back of your computer (try it in each..there could be several) but consult your pc manual to find out which jack is correct (the jacks are usually colour coded nowadays)

make sure the speakers are plugged in properly and turned on. if they do not turn on it may be a fawlty power cable (jiggling it about can help!)

make sure your audio drivers are installed properly. when you try playing music, does an error message pop up? if so, drivers aren't installed (or installed correct at least).. drivers can be found on the cd that came with your computer in most cases, or online.

finally, the speakers might just be buggered and beyond hope! try them in enother computer or plug them into a lineout jack on a cd player/ipod etc and see if they work to ensure they are ok.

On some computers there are 2 jacks for speakers, make sure to try both (for some reason, one will work and the other doesn't).

If that doesn't fix it, then it could quite possibly be the wrong driver for the sound card.
