the reason i ask this is cuz i had a teacher that, whenever someone would say their done, she would say, "chickens get done, people get finished."

Strictly this is not a question of what is GRAMMATICALLY correct, but of the proper meaning and usage of a specific word.

That said, I believe it IS correct usage. The complaint that you cannot use "done" in the same sense as "finished" when referring to someone's work is a bit of pedantic nonsense!!

"Done" for "finished" has been used since at least 1300 in English (as noted in the Oxford English Dictionary). Only in the early 20th century did some folks --perhaps those whose own English dialect was slightly different-- begin to insist that "I am done" is incorrect, or at best colloquial.

For more on the history of this word and its usage see the entry "done" = "finished" in the "AUE usage FAQ"

Actually, "Meat gets done, we get finished" is also incorrect. Meat cooks, and is then done, (or will be done, or was done...it cannot "get" anything.) We also cannot "get" finished" but rather ARE finished, or WILL finish. Seeing as done is synonymous with finished, it is technically not grammatically incorrect to use "done" in place of finish. However, retrospectively speaking in the English language, finished is the popular choice.

As an adjective, done does not mean finished in relation to people; it refers to things; you could have said, my work is done but not that you were done, unless you meant cooked adequately or tired (lol):

adj.
Having been carried out or accomplished; finished: a done deed.
Cooked adequately.
Socially acceptable: Spitting on the street is just not done in polite society.
Informal Totally worn out; exhausted.
