A as Imaka said is an article. e.g. A fish lived in a lake. So, not only is "a" a letter but also an article like "the".

"A" is the first word. The indefinite article e.g. A bus, A car, A dog.


Aachen isn't a word, it's a German town...possibly the first word in your encyclopaedia but not in a dictionary.

according to the oxford english dictionary the first word is A but if you want a real word it is Aa'chen which was an acient city in Germany very near to the Dutch and Belgium bordes.
