I would try it first on a trampoline with someone spotting you until you can do it really well on the trampoline without anyone spotting you. Then, do it on the ground, but with mats AND with someone to spot you. Once you get really good with the mats, try it without the mats, but once again with someone spotting you. If this sound like too much work, then join gymnastics and they will teach you, but probably in the same way. Also, upper body strength is really important. If you can't do pull-ups, I would not even attempt a back hand spring. Do loads of push ups and wait until you have enough body strength to do at least 5 pull-ups, then attempt a back hand spring. Good luck and be careful! :-)

Someone earlier said you want to keep your arms locked DONT DO THAT! you can break your arm or dislocate your elbow. You need to get an instructor. If you want to build skills that will help you try doing bridges. It will help build arm strenth back flexibility and will teach you the proper position your body should be in when you start doing backhandsprings. Instructors are important though because you can really hurt yourself.

First off you will not break your head; you will break your neck. Second, I was a gymnastic instructor for over 10 years and a gymnast myself. I can not stress the importance of this enough, seek out a good gymnastic instructor or school where you can be taught the proper technique and spotted. It really stinks to be paralyzed. Don't listen to your cheerleader friends who say it's easy. It's easy if you know how to do it; if you don't it may kill you.
