Okidoki, I have a movie on my PC that I downloaded. It is an avi file.
I have just bought and installed a dvd-rw drive and want to burn it onto a disk.
Question 1 is - would I have to change the format of the file to be able to watch it on a dvd player?
Question number 2 - can anyone recommend a freeware program that is good for burning dvd's and/or changing the format?
most of the movies I download are either avi or mpeg extension.

Ta very much!

If going for Nero, please note that, to burn DVD video, you will need either the full retail version or Essentials (the OEM version) Suite 3. Essentials Suite 1 only does DVD data formats.

It depends on your DVD player. If you have a fairly new one there's a chance it will support DivX files, so all you have to do is burn the file onto DVD with Nero without converting it. If you google your DVD's model number you should be able to find out.

If you have an older model DVD player that doesn't support DivX you will have to convert the avi file to VOB. There are versions of Nero that will do this for you, but I suspect you'd be better using one of the applications listed on the site below:

For most dvd players you need to convert to a dvd format. Some dvd players are able to play avi though.

DVD uses vob files which are esentially a form of mpeg. You can use various programs such as nero visionexpress, vso convertXtoDVD.
